making some killer art, doing what they do…..
Behind all the bling and leather and chrome out there, you might think we’re all the same–or at least from a distance.
I was enjoying an article by Scotty Kerekes at HD Open Road about how times have changed around bikes. Continue Reading →
I overheard some bikers talking in a Daytona bar, they were discussing some wild, crazy and insane customs that they had seen out near Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona Harley-Davidson dealership, at an area known as The Battlegrounds. Continue Reading →
To keep us well fed, happy, healthy and wise we’ve asked Chef Tiana to clue us in when it comes to what we should and shouldn’t put in our mouths. Seems to the 45dgree brain trust that we’ve left it to Packaged Goods Corporations and advertisers to tell us what we should and shouldt be eating…. and well…. does that really make sense? – steveb
Tri-Tip aka….bottom sirloin butt or triangle roast, is a nicely marbled tender and very flavorful cut of beef. For many years Tri-Tip was ground into hamburger or cubed for soup meat at the butcher shop. This was because there’s only one Tri-Tip per side of cow, so butchers didn’t want to use up the space in the display case. Yet today this overlooked cut of beef has made a come back , especially here in California, where the majority of Tri-Tips are shipped. Continue Reading →
I stopped by Chaos Cycles last week to shoot George & Dee’s new bike “33″. While I was there, I filled in some of the gaps and shot 3 more of their machines, some of which you’ve seen in Print before.
The ability to express yourself with the written word is critical, especially in the digital universe. 45dgree is always on the hunt for new contributors and talent and we regularly (here) hear “I can’t write”, p’shaw we say and so we connected with an old friend and award winning writer, Mark Bellusci to hep us put the matter in perspective and give us some tips about how to make writing an enjoyable experience! – stephen berner/45dgree

I once had a friend who believed that the back seat of your motorcycle should be small and uncomfortable enough to discourage your wife from riding along. That way you can ride the way you like without worrying about it. My wife doesn’t ride, so I have no problem there, but I’ve come to appreciate his point. I love spending time with my wife, and if she rode, I’d probably want her to be comfortable on the back, but the idea is that sometimes a ride alone is good for what ails me. Obviously a ride with someone on the back tends to be a pretty different type anyways, at least in my experience.
Roxanna’s 1995 Panhead started life as a Harley-Davidson Heritage Nostalgia. And that started out as a dream fifteen or so years earlier, when in her twenties, she began to hanker after a vintage bike. Continue Reading →

Being able to create the coolest looking choppers with your bare hands is a real talent, but in Billy Lane’s case, it was a talent that he learned through hard graft, blood sweat and tears. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, custom bike builder extraordinaire, Billy Lane, holds an Associate of Science Degree from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University. Making it imperfect is often the toughest thing to do…..

You see the darnedest, most interesting things when you visit a shop and pay attention…
The ol’ biker wave is always a hot topic. Every time I post a strip related, it kicks up a terrific discussion about the merits of waving or not waving, or who to wave to, or who ignored you once and what they were riding. Not really too important one way or the other, but opinions abound when I post anything related to the wave.
While you’re here, I also wrote a bit about a couple of other biker cartoonists that may catch your fancy. Check it out.
Michael Barragan, Evil Spirit’s driving force has one hell of a convoluted past. If you enter his name into just about any Internet search engine you will be confronted with a Wikipedia encyclopedia page informing you about the 1990s rock band ‘Plexi.’ Continue Reading →
Rarely does being a leathercrafter make me cringe. This only happens when I take in the work of someone whose talent is 20,000 leagues under the sea and so far advanced by humanoid standards that any comparison to a mortals work feels laughable. Continue Reading →
What is it about gearheads and stickers? It seems that every guy I know who is into bikes or hot rods loves stickers. If you post on a message board that you have some new stickers to give away you’ll have 50 replies from people wanting to get some of them. They don’t even have to be cool stickers, although if they ARE cool stickers the demand will increase by ten thousand. If you go to a show, you’ll see guys grabbing stickers from every booth they can. Continue Reading →

Christian bailed out on chatter, decided to get his personal life back to being personal, said farewell to the incessant undertone of distraction and did what few of us have the balls to do – decided to dedicate himself to his art, his craft and to focus his precious energy on what is most meaningful to him. Yea, thats right – chew on that, eh? Continue Reading →
I’ve heard some discussion on the distinction between education and experience. There’s an old saying that education is expensive. It took me years to understand that this wasn’t necessarily the cost of a college education, but the cost of the experiences that led to the education. I didn’t learn that in some darn class, either; Continue Reading →
What a little sensation this Bling inspired chopper is, but what really attracted my attention to this back to basics, style of rigid, was the fact that Andy Bergin and his girlfriend never seemed to be off it. Continue Reading →
Through the winter I usually have a full face helmet that I wear. For obvious reasons here in the mid-west, it just allows me to piss and moan about something else when the face shield fogs up. Continue Reading →
What you see here is a carved bronze shifter knob. When I say carved, I mean that literally. I start out with a block of solid bronze billet. The next stage takes about 3 hours using a heavy rotary file. This stage is all about getting the basic shape
10 hours in, the inside has been hollowed out and I have switched to a smaller file setup. After 15 hours the final details are complete the most tedious, such as the skull cracks, teeth detail, and fragile face area. I am now using a file with a cutting head so small it is barely visible. The final piece is polished and acid etched. -L

After searching tirelessly to find the best brush pens for my work, and finally deciding, let myself run out of ‘em. Sure, it still has ink in it, but the tip seems kinda rough and worn out. It occurred to me I need to work the brush pen with a little more finesse to get more life from the pen. You can’t work a brush pen like a regular felt tip, though they’re very similar in many ways. But if you scribble with a brush pen, you’ll fray the end. Continue Reading →

I’ve been thinking lately about how much reading western novels has influenced my imagination. Either that or my imagination sought out reading like you’d find from Zane Grey and later Louis L’Amour. Somewhere in the last ten years I got turned onto Larry McMurtry as well. Continue Reading →

As bikers, we all know the freedom of being in the wind. We travel highways and roads often crowded with cagers, but occasionally we find an open road where our two wheels are the only ones spinning down the highway and the sound of our pipes the only echos
to be heard.
Whether sharing the road with citizens or Brothers and Sisters, we ride. embracing the freedom of the wind, living in a Country giving us that right of opportunity, thankful for a new days dawning, a new road to travel.. ever mindful of the heavy price paid in order for our freedoms to exist. Judge not, lest ye be judged…
I’m not precisely certain where in the Good Book it says that, but it surely seems like good advice. Then there’s the pop culture version–when you point your finger at someone else, you’ve got three fingers pointing back at yourself. If Jones keeps up on all the little rules he holds for others, he’ll be walking the rest of his life!

Looking at a machine as clean as this 1991 vintage H-D FXR, fondly named Kwiksilver, a super-sano clean as a whistle, hyper-customized machine from Brian Klock and his team at Klock Werks, it’s hard to believe that it had such a down and dirty beginning. Really, I am serious when I say “dirty”, because as it turns out, this bike was borne out of the chaos and wreckage of a flood that damn near made it impossible for Team Klock to keep on doing business, forget about going forward with a plan that ended with this bike being shown at Michael Lichter’s Eternal Combustion show held during 2010’s Sturgis festivities. At this end of this first week posting my strip at 45Dgree, I thought I’d introduce the strip to anyone who has never seen it before. I’ve been working on it since October of 2009. Initially it was once a week, then twice a week, and now three times a week. We get to follow the life and mistakes of one Marvin K. Jones as he pursues freedom on his own terms, including when it leads him to jail.
Thanks to Stephen for including the strip in the offerings here on 45dgree, and thank you for reading.

I came across Nelson Citta’s 1938 Knucklehead chopper at the Eustis Antique Motorcycle Show in Florida that is held the first weekend of Daytona Bike Week each year. It is very unusual to find custom bikes at this show, or any antique motorcycle show for that matter, as most of the bikers who own vintage motorcycles or attend such events are fanatical purists who believe that bikes of a certain age should be left as the factory produced them, rather than seeing them cut up and turned into custom bikes of one description or another. Nelson however, is quite rightly very proud of the bike that he has built, so took it along anyway. Continue Reading →
Telling a friends story is a funny thing to try and do – especially when there are three Steve’s involved and you’re one of them. It‘s about as tough to do as to hold onto a bike like this 1958 Pan for more than 37 years, staying the course to bring it back to stock, resisting the urge to hack it up and follow the circuitous route of trendiness. A total rat bike when he got it at the ripe age of 15, a bad bondo’d chopper with a grasshopper springer, no front brake and a host of OSHA, non-compliant behaviors, this machine was a real far cry from the stock appearing mild performance sweet heart you see here. For a long time I’d been looking for an alternative to carrying a back pocket wallet as well as cash. I like carrying as few items as possible, but always find myself needing to carry a few cards and cash at the very minimum. I like using a money clip rather than sticking my bills in a wallet (or a rubber band..lol) and so.. the criteria for the pocket wallet were clear… Continue Reading →
One of the wonderful things about the internet is that it gives us access to so many wonderfully talented people. And just as in real life, it’s true that you can identify whose got it and who doesn’t, and upon reading Eddie Sorez’s poerty – I knew right away, he was the real deal… I think you will agree.
I know many of us don’t consider ourselves poetry type folks, but in this instance, I ask you lighten up, keep an open mind and give it a shot. Eddie does with words what talented photographers do with images…. -steveb Continue Reading →
My god, where do I start to tell you about French Melanie? She is the sort of girl that makes you think, what the hell have I been doing with my life? When she starts to tell you about all the places that she has lived, and all of the things that she has done. Straight off the top of my head, I can tell you that she has lived in four of the liveliest cities in the world: Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles. She has always been heavily into the biker/Rocker world. She started riding motorcycles in the UK before she even learnt to drive, I guess at the age of about nineteen. Continue Reading →
