Hear Ye! The 2nd Dixie Roundup is on Apr 28, 2012

First some history:  The first Dixie Roundup grew out of the monthly bikenight/openhouses that Larry was having about once a month at Garage Company Customs (Garco).  Somehow Larry got hooked up with the Dice Magazine crew during his exploits of running the shop and going to shows. This led to the Dice guys wanting to sponsor a “Dice Party” here in Alabama and Larry was happy to help make it happen.  Continue Reading →

Camshaft Basics

It is pretty safe bet to say that everyone has their own opinion of what camshaft dynamics should be used for a particular engines style and function … kind of like cooks in a kitchen … take 15 cooks and ask them to all cook the same thing and you will get 15 different tastes, some really good and some that flat out suck! BRETTON WOODS, NH, February 13th, 2012 – The Main Event for 2012 wrapped up in proper fashion with the most progressive course in the contest’s history. At the top of course was a 50 foot plus step up jump that led into the boxing ring start area for the rail, box, heavyweight punching bag and 12 foot vitaminwater wall ride; to say the riders were stoked would be a major understatement. FXR Suspension by Race Tech

A check of the paperwork revealed that a few weeks ago, literally 13 years to the day that I first got the front end for my FXR back from Race Tech, I ‘d sent it in again – for the same thing – a soup to nuts rebuild. The truth is, if you keep a machine long enough, you will wind up going back over your original work, refreshing some of your modifications…  because most everything on an older machine is a ‘wear” item and in time will require replacement. Fireplaces @ Home

It’s Wintertime and the smell of fire is in the air. At the Berner household we enjoy having fires at home during the winter months. I don’t know that it does much for heating our house… I have a feeling the fire sucks most of the heat out of the room, but boy it sure does look good, it smells nice and gives the house a glow it doesn’t have under normal circumstances. steveb’s custom designed Wesco “mullets”

Yeah, call me hard to please, a pain in the butt, a snob maybe – but I want footwear that fits. I’ve been through this quest for podiatric comfort on a pretty regular basis since I’ve been a kid, trying a pair of shoes on, walking around the store, thinking they fit, only to find that they don’t really work so well in daily use and subsequently wind up in the back of the closet, collecting dust. Just ask my brother in law Mike, he’s got a closet full of new (and very stylish I might add) footwear donated by yours truly over the years – finding footwear that fits isn’t so easy for a lot of us. Polishing Basics: Custom Design Studio

In this installment we’re going to discuss the polishing process. Sometimes you get dust or dirt nibs in your final clear coats. If you want a show quality finish, you should consider taking it that last step.

Sometimes you just want to get rid of that “orange peel”. That’s the term used to describe the paint surface that has mild surface texture to it. Most ” orange peel” is caused by low gun pressure, lack of adequate reducers to thin it down, or both. Continue Reading →

Proper Gasket Installation – the James Gasket way

Gasket Installation Techniques and Considerations
In these tough economic times, many riders are choosing to service their bikes at home rather than take them to their local shop or dealership. This can be a way to save a few bucks on labor. Keep in mind though, a qualified mechanic at a reputable shop will back his or her work which will give you piece of mind down the road, if your skills are sketchy. Continue Reading →

Custom Design Studio: on cleanliness

I’m Kirk Taylor and my shop, Custom Design Studios, has been in business since 1988. We started by satisfying the needs of the motorcycle community because there weren’t many good, reliable painters in this area. Now, by way of background, I grew up in a machine shop where Pops was making Springer and Girder front ends back in the 70′s – so to dispel a common myth… I’m not just a bike painter. I do complete custom fabrication work, ground up customs and just about everything in between, including service – to pay the landlord. Continue Reading →

Custom Cycle Engineering & Race Tech partner to fix an FLHR

Big W’s Roadside BBQ

With the economy being what is, and the tenor of our day to day lives a little less frivolous than they were back in recent memory, we are focusing on the “core” in a lot of instances – both in our personal as well as business lives. Many of us eat at home, as much because we eat better and have some semblance of control over what we put in our mouths, but also because it’s pretty efficient and cost effective, especially with a family.
